After using ChatGPT Work both locally and in the cloud, I have noticed a difference that becomes particularly clear when a task stops being simple. Researching a topic for a few hours is not the same as working with code, folders, client files, browsers, documentation, WordPress or a complete website migration.

That is why I believe the most interesting comparison is not just ChatGPT Chat vs Work, something I already covered in my article on the differences between Chat and Work in ChatGPT. The question I find more useful now is this: what changes between local ChatGPT Work and Work Cloud?

The short answer is that this is not about one environment using a “smarter” model than the other. What changes is the space in which Work can operate: files, applications, the browser, sessions, permissions and the ability to keep running a task when our computer is no longer available. In complex projects, that context can make quite a difference to the result.

Local ChatGPT Work vs Work Cloud: a quick comparison

Before going into detail, this is the comparison I find most useful:

Feature Local Work Work Cloud
Execution On the user’s computer On infrastructure managed by OpenAI
Files on your computer Yes, with permission Not directly
Desktop applications Yes, where supported and authorised Does not use local applications
Browser Desktop browsing environment Remote cloud browser
Website sessions Depend on the environment being used Maintains its own sessions
Can continue with your computer switched off Not if it needs local resources Yes
Supervision while working Very direct More suited to delegation
Best suited to Files, websites, code, audits and migrations Research and autonomous tasks

OpenAI explains in its official ChatGPT Work documentation that Work on the web and mobile runs in the cloud, while local chats started in the desktop app run on your computer and can use local files and applications when you grant the relevant permissions.

What is local ChatGPT Work?

Local Work is the mode we use through the desktop app when we want our own computer’s environment to form part of the task.

This difference matters much more than it might seem. An AI system may have excellent reasoning capabilities, but if it only knows what we have written in a prompt, it has far less context than when it can work with the folders, files and tools that actually belong to the project.

It can work with local files and folders

This is probably one of its biggest advantages. We can grant access to a specific folder or project and allow Work to use the files it needs during the task.

Imagine a website migration. We might have an export of URLs, spreadsheets, screenshots, code, documentation, images and different versions of the project. In Work Cloud, I would need to provide the necessary resources through uploads or sources accessible from the cloud. Locally, those materials can instead form a direct part of the authorised working environment.

This greatly reduces the need to exchange information manually and, above all, helps preserve context during a lengthy task.

It can use tools on your computer

The desktop app can work with certain resources and applications where the operating system, plan and permissions allow it.

For me, this is one of the significant changes in professional AI: we are no longer using only a system that explains what we should do. We can set an objective and allow it to participate in a real workflow.

This development fits perfectly with the work I am doing in artificial intelligence and automation for businesses: first understand the process, then decide which parts an agent can take on.

Working from the desktop reduces intermediate steps

This advantage may seem small until you start using Work on large projects.

If I am working on a website, I may need to review local files, consult the live site, check documentation, analyse an export and then modify other related elements. When all that information belongs to the same context, much of the copying, pasting, uploading, downloading and explaining things again disappears.

The AI does not magically become more intelligent. It simply has better conditions in which to work.

Does local Work need a powerful computer?

You do not need a MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro chip to use ChatGPT Work. The app’s requirements are considerably lower, and Work can be used on compatible computers that are much less powerful.

However, being able to run the application is one thing; working comfortably with demanding projects is another.

In my case, I use a MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro chip, and when we push local Work hard, I notice it. If I am working on web development with many tabs, numerous files, open applications and long-running processes, the computer’s temperature rises. And yes, at certain points it gets quite hot.

I do not interpret this as meaning that the entire AI model is running inside the Mac. That is not how it works. What we do have is a local environment doing real work with files, applications and processes alongside the other tools I am using.

For that reason, I would not assume that the experience will be identical on every computer. A machine with less memory, slower storage or many simultaneous processes may feel less responsive as the workload increases.

For simple tasks, we will probably notice very little difference. However, once we start handling large projects, code, many information sources and several tools at once, the available hardware becomes much more relevant.

What is Work Cloud, and what is its main advantage?

Work Cloud operates differently. The task runs on infrastructure managed by OpenAI and uses a remote environment.

It cannot directly access a folder that exists only on our computer, but it has its own resources, supplied files, connected applications and web tools.

Its main advantage is clear: the task can continue even when our computer is no longer available.

The cloud browser works in a remote environment

When Work operates in the cloud, browsing also takes place within that remote environment. Its sessions are independent of the ones we have open on our computer.

For example, if I am signed into a platform in my Mac’s browser, that does not mean the same session automatically exists in Work Cloud. The remote environment maintains its own authentication and sessions.

This may seem like a limitation, but it is also part of its main advantage: the process does not depend on our computer staying switched on.

Work Cloud can be better for lengthy research

If I want to study a market, review numerous public sources and prepare a report, I probably do not need Work to access my computer.

In that situation, I prefer Work Cloud. I can start the task, get on with other things and return later to review the result. If the agent needs authentication, additional information or confirmation, it will stop at that point.

I therefore do not consider Work Cloud an inferior version of local Work. It is another environment suited to a different way of delegating.

Why local Work can seem more powerful

This was one of my first impressions when using both environments. Certain jobs seemed to move forward much more smoothly locally.

The explanation makes sense to me: the model’s intelligence does not necessarily change; what changes is the context available to do the work.

A very capable model with little context may be less useful than the same system working with the right documents, appropriate tools and access to the project’s actual resources.

That is why I think we start making a mistake when we talk about agents and only ask which model is smarter. It also matters what the agent can consult, which tools it can use and where the work is running.

SEO, web development and migrations: where I notice the difference most

In my work as an SEO consultant in Alicante, the difference between local Work and Work Cloud is particularly noticeable when a task combines many information sources and we need to preserve context over a long period.

Technical SEO audits

An SEO audit may require spreadsheets, exports, code, URLs, screenshots, structured data and queries across different tools.

When all those elements are related, working directly with a local folder substantially reduces the need to keep moving information from one place to another.

It also reduces the risk of analysing a file in isolation without considering how it relates to the rest of the project.

Website migrations

Here, the difference becomes even clearer.

A migration is not simply about generating a list of recommendations. We need to connect old and new URLs, redirects, canonicals, content, indexability, navigation, internal architecture and many other signals.

A seemingly small change can affect another part of the project. Maintaining context throughout the work is therefore essential.

If Work can consult the related materials within the same environment, the process feels much more natural than continually supplying small fragments of information.

Web and application development

It is also particularly useful when working on application development and integration projects.

A development project can contain dozens or hundreds of interrelated files. Modifying one element without understanding the rest of the architecture can create new problems.

In that type of work, being able to connect the available files with the pages, tools and documentation we are using reduces a great deal of friction.

Work Cloud has a hard-to-match advantage: autonomy

So far, it might sound as though I prefer local Work for everything. I do not.

Work Cloud has a huge advantage when my aim is to delegate a complete task without having to keep watching it.

Research, market analysis, gathering information or preparing a document from online sources can work perfectly well in the cloud.

In those cases, keeping my computer connected adds little value. I prefer to start the task and let it continue while I do something else.

This is one of the differences I value most between the two environments: local is especially useful when I want to work alongside the agent; cloud is useful when I want to delegate.

Local Work Sync is beginning to connect both worlds

One of the most interesting developments is Local Work Sync.

OpenAI allows a new task started through local Work to be continued later on the web or mobile when the feature is available and enabled for the account or workspace.

The idea is very interesting: start working with the resources on our computer and then continue the same conversation from another device.

However, if a step needs local files or tools, the computer must remain connected and available.

If we start a new turn in a synced task and the computer is no longer available, that new turn may start in a cloud environment, but it cannot access the disconnected computer’s resources.

Older local tasks are not converted automatically either. The official Local Work Sync documentation states that the feature applies to new compatible tasks.

Local Work does not mean all data stays exclusively on your computer

I consider this point particularly important because the word “local” can lead to a misunderstanding.

The fact that some of the work runs using our computer does not necessarily mean that all information remains exclusively on that device.

OpenAI states that messages and task context may be stored in the cloud even when the work uses local resources.

Therefore, local execution and exclusively local storage are different concepts.

In a professional environment, I would also always apply the principle of least access. If Work needs a particular folder, I would grant access to that folder rather than the whole computer.

The same logic should apply to any agent involved in a business process: only the permissions and sources it actually needs.

Which should you choose: local ChatGPT Work or Work Cloud?

I do not think there is a universal winner. My approach is fairly straightforward.

  • Local Work: projects involving files, code, websites, applications, audits, migrations or tasks I want to supervise closely.
  • Work Cloud: research, gathering online information, preparing reports and lengthy tasks I want to delegate while getting on with other things.
  • Local Work Sync: when I want to combine the context on my computer with the ability to keep supervising the task from another device.

The decision does not depend solely on which environment has more capabilities. It depends on where the information is, which tools the agent needs and how much human oversight the process requires.

An agent’s capabilities also depend on context

For me, this is one of the most interesting conclusions from using local Work and Work Cloud.

For a long time, we have compared AI systems almost exclusively by looking at the model: which reasons better, which writes better code or which answers more accurately.

With agents, another variable is starting to matter.

What information can it access?

A system that only receives a written description has less context than one that can properly consult documents, files and tools related to the task.

This idea is also connected to AI visibility and GEO. Before a system can use particular information correctly, it must first find it, understand it and connect it to the appropriate context.

Exactly the same applies within a business. The better we organise sources, permissions, tools and objectives, the more likely an agent is to produce a useful result.

ChatGPT Work is changing how we use artificial intelligence

The early years of ChatGPT were mainly about conversation: we wrote a question, received an answer and continued through further messages.

That approach remains very useful and is not going away.

However, Work introduces a different way of operating. We can define an objective and allow the agent to move through several steps, using different tools and sources until it produces a result.

This is a significant difference.

We are no longer talking only about improving prompts. We are starting to talk about processes, permissions, applications, files, browsers, data and human oversight.

For any business looking to adopt AI agents, I believe that architecture will be just as important as the choice of model.

Frequently asked questions about local ChatGPT Work and Work Cloud

Is local ChatGPT Work smarter than Work Cloud?

No. OpenAI does not state that local Work automatically uses a smarter model. What changes is the available environment: files, tools, applications and other resources that can provide more context for the task.

Can Work Cloud access files on my computer?

Not directly. On the web or mobile, we need to provide files through an accessible source, or use local Work with the relevant permissions.

Does Work Cloud keep working if I switch off my computer?

Yes. Because it runs on remote infrastructure, a cloud task can continue when our computer is no longer available, until it finishes or needs our intervention.

Do I need a powerful computer to use local Work?

No. The minimum requirements are considerably lower than my MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro chip. However, if we work with many files, applications, browser tasks and simultaneous processes, having more resources can noticeably improve the experience.

Can I start a task locally and continue it on my phone?

Yes, when Local Work Sync is available and enabled. If the task needs to use local files or tools, the computer must remain connected.

Which option would I use for SEO?

For research based solely on online sources, Work Cloud can be ideal. For a technical audit, a migration, web development or a project with many related files, I prefer local Work.

My view as an artificial intelligence expert

After using both environments, I believe the difference between local ChatGPT Work and Work Cloud matters much more than it appears when we only look at the interface.

Locally, I feel I am working with an agent much closer to my actual workspace. If a project involves files, code, the browser, documentation and several related tools, reducing intermediate steps can make quite a difference.

I notice this particularly on my MacBook Pro with an M3 Pro chip when we push Work to its limits with lengthy tasks. The computer works, gets hot and makes it clear that we are not simply having a conventional conversation. That does not mean an M3 Pro is necessary, but it does confirm to me that the local environment matters when the work becomes complex.

At the same time, I would not give up Work Cloud. For research I want to delegate and review later, I find it even more convenient. I can start the work without worrying about keeping my computer available.

My conclusion is therefore not “local is better than cloud”. It is this: an agent’s value depends as much on its context, tools and permissions as on its intelligence.

I believe this is one of the significant changes in professional AI in 2026. For years, we have mainly talked about models and prompts. Now we are also talking about files, browsers, applications, permissions, local execution, the cloud and working architecture.

And that is precisely where tools such as ChatGPT Work start to look less like a simple chatbot and more like something much more interesting: a system capable of taking a real part in our working processes.
