A guide for ecommerce projects

"Introduction

What is PrestaShop?

PrestaShop is an ecommerce platform for creating and managing an online shop. It is designed around selling products and organising the information and processes that a shop needs.

This article completes my introduction to three website platforms: WordPress, Shopify and PrestaShop. The aim is to help you ask better questions before commissioning an ecommerce project.

A shop owner usually knows the products well. Translating that knowledge into a useful online catalogue takes planning. Categories, product details, variants and purchase conditions must make sense to someone who cannot ask a member of staff in person.

"PrestaShop

What is PrestaShop used for?

PrestaShop provides a foundation for an online store. The design and configuration need to fit the catalogue, customers and way the business operates. Additional requirements may involve modules, integrations or development.

If you are unfamiliar with the terminology, my article on content management systems (in Spanish) explains the broader concept. For ecommerce, the practical question is how the system supports both the customer journey and the team’s daily work.

For example, customers need to find the right product and understand its options. Your team needs to keep product information accurate and know what to do when an order or integration requires attention.

Open-source software and the complete project cost

Distinguish the software from the complete service needed to run a shop. PrestaShop presents different offers on its official solutions page. Check the current scope of each option before comparing costs.

Even where software is available without a licence fee, a working store still needs resources. Hosting, configuration, themes, modules, maintenance and specialist work can affect the budget. A proposal should explain which items are included and which recur.

The most useful comparison is not simply “free versus paid”. Compare the same requirements, responsibilities and support arrangements across the options you are considering.

How should you plan a PrestaShop project?

Start with the catalogue

List your product types, variants and the information customers need before buying. Identify the categories that make sense to them, rather than reproducing an internal stock list without explanation.

Plan how product information will be created, reviewed and updated. A shop with attractive pages but inconsistent availability or incomplete specifications creates avoidable questions for both customers and staff.

Map the order process

Describe the steps from choosing a product to fulfilling the order. Establish which teams and external services are involved. Then test realistic scenarios rather than checking only a successful purchase of one simple item.

Consider how the team will respond when information changes, a payment fails or a customer needs help. Clear responsibilities are as important as the initial configuration.

Define integrations and maintenance

If the shop must connect to accounting, stock management or another business system, document the data exchanged and who maintains the connection. Confirm how errors will be detected and resolved.

Updates should have an owner and a checking process. The initial launch is one stage of the project; the store must remain usable as its catalogue and requirements evolve.

PrestaShop, SEO and customer experience

A platform does not generate sales simply because it is installed. Search visibility depends on the pages, their purpose and the information available to customers, alongside technical implementation and wider demand.

For an ecommerce review, I would examine priority categories and products, navigation, content gaps and the steps leading to an enquiry or purchase. An SEO audit can help establish which obstacles deserve attention first.

Measure outcomes over a defined period. Search impressions, website visits and completed orders answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable results.

Examples and choosing the right platform

A successful store can provide useful ideas, but its performance cannot be attributed to PrestaShop alone. Product selection, marketing, pricing, fulfilment and customer service all contribute to the business.

Rather than repeat unverified market-share or revenue claims, I recommend reviewing documented work and its scope. My portfolio of projects distinguishes the different assignments I have carried out.

To choose between PrestaShop and other platforms, start with your requirements and the people who will manage the shop. The best fit is the one that supports that work within an agreed budget and a maintainable setup.
